A Zen Approach to Fear Anger and Depression

Zen can have many meanings for many people and Zen is also used for many reasons. There are formal Zen schools of thought and training as well as several styles of teaching. It also seems to be a constant learning process and the philosophy supporting Zen learning is the more you learn the more you will benefit from its training. Whether you attend a Zen school or seek private instruction from a Zen master the primary emphasis is on awakening, finding your inner strength, and enlightenment. By engaging in some of the fundamental processes of Zen like meditation and relaxation techniques you may find that you have more positive energy in your life as well.

I’m sure you’ve probably heard some of the sayings that are relative to Zen philosophy like, “Zen encompasses all that there is,” or “Zen is an attitude and it’s what you make it,” or “it is what it is.” I believe that Zen is an attitude and how I philosophically view life and everything that happens during the course of my day. I’ve also heard it said that Zen is nothing and Zen is everything. So basically you can philosophically take what you want and leave the rest. Learning and practicing Zen can help you manage some of the negative influences that may surround your life like fear, anger, depression, anxieties, failure, sorrow, illness, and frustration.

There are so many situations that can create fear that it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between fears that are real and those that exist irrationally in our own minds. Some fears may seem irrational to most people, but for those individuals who suffer from certain fears, they are very real. Often times these irrational fears are known as phobias. Actually most phobias and fears are usually developed early in your life and if you still, from time to time, have those dreaded feelings, it is most likely coming from your past. We all suffer from anxiety and feelings of apprehension now and again. It’s fairly common simply because most of our attitudes and how we see or perceive the world around us is brought forth from childhood to adulthood.

If you are having a difficult time getting past a fear consider engaging in a formal Zen training program to help you reduce or eliminate it. Any fear, real or imagined, can stop you in your tracks, and can make it extremely difficult to advance in any area of your life. Learning and practicing deep breathing exercises and repeating positive uplifting affirmations can help you manage your fears by concentrating and focusing on your awareness of your fear and realize that you have total control in eliminating it.

It’s so easy to indulge in anger, isn’t it? It’s that one emotion that has the power to overtake you, without you even realizing it sometimes. It’s like something or someone really caused you to blow a head gasket, before you know it you are really scorched, you could use that vein in your neck to tow a car, and now it’s going to take a considerable amount of time to cool down. The problem is the psychological and physiological damage is already done.

Just because something or someone really angers you doesn’t necessarily make you a bad person. It’s actually how you deal with your anger that determines whether or not you are a good or a bad person. Everyone from time to time gets really fried about something or someone, and basically when this happens, the important issue at hand is how you direct your anger.

Anger is a most unpleasant emotion, and yet oddly enough it is completely normal. It seems like at any given moment something can happen that really makes you angry, and that’s okay, you’re just living in the moment. At this point, anger is not really all that harmful. The best thing to do, although I must admit, is not the easiest, is to let the anger flow through you and away from you. It is when your anger advances to the next level that your physical and mental abilities are negatively affected, as well as your relationship with others.

Learning, practicing, and becoming Zen is an excellent way to help you manage your anger. Zen can empower you to control your anger, and it’s absolutely vital that you do so especially if you are easily angered, because if you don’t control your anger it will control you. Breathing and relaxation techniques can effectively help you reduce your tendency to become angry. It’s critical that you identify the reason that causes your anger. Your anger is most likely caused by a psychological or physical pain and once you own it and use Zen techniques you will be able to manage it before wisps of smoke begin to emanate from your ears.

The Zen techniques of meditation, deep breathing, and relaxation can definitely help you become less angry and more peaceful. It will also help you think and rationalize before acting or reacting to a situation that causes you to become angry. These techniques can also help you take an otherwise negative volatile situation and turn into a positive experience. You’ll also be less likely jump to conclusions and impulsively react to an angry situation in a negative way. Zen techniques can help you take control of your life experiences, calm your mind, help you think clearly, and any one regardless of age can learn to have positive more enjoyable experiences.

Actually everyone at one time or another gets a case of the blues, feeling sad and down. Given the circumstances that we all live by, relationships, business, jobs, death and dying, losing loved ones, and financial problems to name a few, it’s easy to see how we can get bummed out from time to time. Feeling a little depressed now and then may seem quite normal.

Often times it is how you deal with bouts of depression that can make the difference in how it affects you in the long run. If you can bounce back from a situation or condition that caused you to become depressed, and return to your normal healthy state of mind, then that’s great. Sometimes just the pressures of the day can really get to you and you start feeling a little blue. When this happens, instead of focusing on what is making you feel this way, try taking that time to reflect on your life, and what you can do to make positive changes.

The techniques of Zen can help you with feelings of sadness and depression. Learning these techniques may very well help you identify your strengths and weaknesses and once you’ve accomplished this you can begin to turn those weaknesses into strengths and this will improve your overall emotional health. Practicing Zen will help you achieve more peace and serenity in your life. There may be some thought processes in your life causing you to feel depressed and you can’t do anything about it, however, meditating and practicing Zen can help you accept those things you cannot change.
