Loading up the bikes and heading for the trails is a great way to add another dimension in exercising and having fun. 1. Don’t lock your head in one rigid position. If you do, you may end up straining your neck muscles. Also don’t tense up your face muscles or clench your jaw as this will affect your ability to breathe correctly. Look around while biking, enjoy your surroundings, and relax. Remember you’re supposed to have fun while getting a good work out.

2. Don’t grip the handlebars tight or lock your elbows keeping your arms straight and stiff. This again causes an unnecessary strain, cause you to lose control of your bike, and it also makes it difficult to turn especially if you have to turn quickly. Do relax, keep your elbows unlocked, move your fingers, and re-position your thumbs.

3. Don’t move your body from side to side. If you do you are just wasting energy and this greatly affects your balance. However, there is an instance when you may have to move from side to side, but that’s only when you are climbing up hill. Do relax your body and keep yourself in a straight line while riding. This will keep you focused and save you energy. Another good tip is to ride with the sun at your back. This will cast a shadow in front of you and this will help you eliminate unneeded body movements as you will be able to see them.

4. Don’t peddle your bike with your knees wide open. This is very awkward and also creates unnecessary resistance slowing you down. Do keep your knees in close to the frame of your bike. Your peddling will be more efficient and powerful and this will cut down on wind resistance giving you a smoother ride.

There are all kinds of clothing available specially made for biking. If you ride for pleasure this type of clothing may not be of that much interest to you but they could be beneficial if you decide to get into racing. They are usually made in bright colors allowing you to be more noticeable and some will have light reflective strips for night riding. There are other accessories you may want to consider in providing you with an enjoyable cycling experience.

1. A lock, say you go biking in a park and stop along the way for a short hike.

2. A carrier, so you can take your bike to the park.

3. Mirrors and lights, handy for riding around town in the evening.

4. A tire pump, this is more of a necessity.

5. A water bottle, it’s important to stay hydrated especially if you are riding for exercise.

6. A small tool kit, what you think you need plus patch repair kit, tire levers, and screwdrivers, both types.
