China is certainly a pioneer in the world of martial arts and their most popular style is Kung Fu, and although it is very well known especially in the movies, there are some other styles that are very interesting, if you can find a school. Kung Fu also has many different factions or styles; the most popular is called Shaolin, named after the Shaolin Temple and the monks who practiced it. Kung Fu is also more than a martial art because it has a culture, and in addition to defending yourself, it is also a great way to exercise. Kung Fu is like most other martial arts similar to Karate because it uses hand and foot techniques. Wing Chun is one of the oldest forms of Kung Fu and it is also one of the most popular practiced currently. It is based on the philosophy that the student will be taught to use force to counter force and this allows students who are weaker and smaller in stature to defeat someone who may be bigger and stronger, so basically you would be using your opponent’s aggressive force to defeat him. It also teaches kicks and punches that rely greatly on speed and targeting certain vital areas of the body.

White Crane is a very graceful style of Kung Fu however the defensive and attack forms of this style are extremely effective. The techniques of White Crane are simple and direct but they can take a significant amount of time to learn, however, don’t be fooled by its simplicity, White Crane is also known as the “deadly beauty.”

More than four hundred years ago the Praying Mantis style of Kung Fu was developed. Its creator intensively studied the offensive and defensive movements of the Praying Mantis and perfected this style based on its moves.

Hung Gar is based on the Tiger style and is most effective for hand to hand close quarter techniques.

Aside from the physical techniques of Kung Fu, you will also learn the deeper concepts of a strong character, fairness to everyone, respect, harmony, and self control. So if you are considering a Chinese martial art, the first thing you should do is research and discover what styles are in your area and how far you are willing travel to learn.

Tai Chi is a very old Chinese martial art and it has been practiced for centuries. Earlier on most westerners saw Tai Chi as just a form of exercise, but it is a martial art nonetheless and a very effective one as well. The movements are slow and flowing.
