Diabetes exists in two types, basically referred to as Type 1 and Type 2. Both types involve insulin production in the body and the body’s ability to control and regulate sugar in the blood stream.

Type 1 happens due to a miscommunication in the immune system. It somehow thinks that the insulin cells in the body are harmful and attacks them. When this happens the pancreas stops producing insulin causing an increased level of sugar in the body and this has a negative impact on the kidneys. Even though type 1 has been termed as juvenile onset diabetes, because symptoms start generally during childhood but it does affect both children and adults. It is very insulin dependent requiring injections consistently. Type 1 is usually genetic and there may be other members of your family, past and present, diagnosed with this type of diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is not the most common type, it develops quickly within a few days, and the symptoms can include the following.

1. The need to urinate frequently because the bodily fluids will move quickly through the kidneys in an effort to reduce the high levels of sugar in the urine.

2. Being thirsty all the time causes you to become easily dehydrated due to going to the bathroom frequently.

3. Generally those diagnosed with type 1 do not have a weight problem and are usually close to their ideal weight. Rapid weight loss is another symptom. There could be a reduction in weight up to 15 pounds in a week.

4. Your appetite will increase. Your body will tell you to eat more because it thinks that glucose is not getting to the cells, and thereby giving the cells the energy it needs to survive.

5. You tire easily as your muscles become weak because they are not getting the nutrients needed for energy.

I was listening to the news some time ago and in their health watch segment they said that diabetes is on the rise. They also said that it has been steadily on the rise for the last fifteen to twenty years. Most of these new cases of diabetes are Type 2, or what is also knows as adult onset. The causes of Type 2 are complicated and not fully understood. There is considerable speculation in the medical community and the health care industry that a big precursor in the development of Type 2 is sedentary life style and being overweight. So if you’re sitting around doing nothing, get off the couch, get your tennies on, do some stretching, and go for a walk. Go on and do it, you’re just going to watch television anyway. You’ll get rid of those extra pounds and feel better than you have in a long time.

It’s never too late to do something about your diabetes. All you have to do is get moving. If you do this on a regular basis you may find that your insulin sensitivity will improve, you will lower your risk of developing heart problems, and you will lose weight. Here are a couple more considerations that should prove helpful in your quest for a more active life style.

Talk to your doctor or health care provider. If you have heart risks, your doctor may want to perform a stress test to determine what exercises are safe for you.  Depending on how complicated your diabetes is, certain activities like resistance or weight training, running, or exercises considered to be high impact could be risky for some people with diabetic retinopathy. There would be a further risk of blood vessel damage and an increase risk of retinal detachment. If you are currently taking insulin, your workout needs special attention to prevent hypoglycemia. Start slow, you’re not in a hurry, progress at your own pace, and do only what you are capable of until you get better and stronger. Start by taking walks and then get progressively faster and go longer. Once you have some miles under your belt, and it’s okay with your doctor, increase the intensity of your workout by doing other things like sports, hiking, bicycling, or martial arts.

According to the World Health Organization, the number of people affected by diabetes has reached 240 million by the year 2010. This statistic, to me, is alarming. Think about it like this, we live in an advanced civilization where technology is growing at a rate never before experienced in the history of the world.  It is truly phenomenal. Our world technology is composed of many different disciplines like computers, aerospace, automotive, and telecommunications. We have made astounding achievements, specifically in the advancement of medicine. While these achievements are used in the treating of dreaded diseases, practically none of it is required to treat diabetes. I know what you are going to say. What about the prescription I take? Was this not developed due to our significant advancements in medical technology? Yes, that is true, but I submit to you, that if you have a program of physical activity, that you participate in daily, you may find yourself less dependent on that script, and on the path to defeating diabetes.

If you have type 2 diabetes you can take control but you have to want to. That means giving up your sedentary way of living and getting involved in a physical program on a daily basis and pay close attention to your nutrition. Stop eating foods high in carbohydrates, sugar, and fats. Stay away from processed foods, fast foods, and start eating more whole foods, and fresh fruits and vegetables. If you are overweight, you know what to do, just do it, get physical and you will feel so much better.

If you don’t control your diabetes and keep it in check, it will lead to other, more serious conditions. Diabetes can cause a degeneration of the retina of the eye called retinopathy, and you could end up losing your sight. You can also experience kidney failure and nervous system disorders. When you experience reduced sensations in your limbs, you may not notice an infection from an injury, and this can progress to a serious stage where the end result is amputation. Sometimes your body can become extremely dehydrated, because of diabetes, causing your body’s metabolism to become extremely unbalanced, the energy in the cells become depleted and they shut down. The result is a diabetic coma.

Approximately 4 million people die every year from diabetes. This number could be greatly reduced if everyone who has diabetes would just take control and following the advice given above with exercise and diet, everyone’s quality of life would be greatly improved. Talk to your doctor and learn about nutrition that would be the most beneficial to your cause. If you experience any number of the following symptoms consult with your doctor. The sooner you get checked out the better, and if you are found to have diabetes, you can get control of it. These symptoms include injuries that are difficult or take a long time to heal, thirsty all the time, feeling tired all the time, and having to urinate frequently. Your doctor can order certain test to determine your risk of developing diabetes. A glucose test and a urinalysis can indicate your level of risk, a fasting plasma glucose test measures the level of glucose in your blood but you have to fast for twelve to fourteen hours, and the oral glucose test which requires fasting for three hours.

Type 2 diabetes is a silent disease in that it is slow to develop and takes considerable time to do so. You won’t recognize type 2 because of its slow development. It is only when type 2 has become advanced that you will begin to experience symptoms. Diabetes is one of the top ten causes of death, especially in industrialized and well developed countries. If you have type 2 diabetes, or if you are at risk or know someone who is, it is vitally important that you learn as much as you can. The more you know the better you will be able to control diabetes. Changing your diet, getting physical, and losing those unwanted pounds will give you the control you need to manage diabetes, and besides there is a whole host of healthy benefits you will experience in addition to improving your diabetic condition.
