In addition to eating whole grains to help increase your daily fiber, another good source of fiber is by eating fresh fruits and vegetables. However it is strongly recommended that if at all possible you consume only organic fruits and vegetables. You will in all likelihood have to shop more often as organic fruits and vegetables will have a shorter storage life than commercially grown produce. Actually that may not be all that important, and here’s why. Based on my own experience, on numerous occasions I have purchased commercially grown produce from the local supermarket where I shop most of the time, and I have had produce start to go bad shortly after bringing it home. Even though organic produce cost more, if you live closer to a whole foods or organic market you should most definitely shop there.

I recently read about a research study conducted by the United States Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration regarding the fruits and vegetables that are most likely to be contaminated by pesticides. Here is the list according to the USDA and the FDA. They are apples, bell peppers, celery, cherries, imported grapes, nectarines, peaches, pears, potatoes, red raspberries, spinach, and strawberries.

You most likely have seen the small section of certified organic produce in your local supermarket and realized that it does not look as appealing as the rest of the produce. That is because of the chemicals used by commercial growers to make their fruits and vegetables last longer and look better. After all most produce goes on a long journey from the farm to the supermarket.

Another recent study conducted by the USDA discovered that 73 percent of commercially grown fruits and vegetables contained at least one pesticide residue but more realistically contains multiple residues. Even though organic produce is better for you than commercially grown produce, these foods are not entirely safe from chemical residues. Imported organic produce is three times more likely to contain illegal pesticide residues and this is due to soil contamination, over spray, and drifting from nearby fields.

This is not all doom and gloom. There are some things you can do as a consumer to improve the quality and effectiveness of the produce you eat. Always try to buy organic when you can and always wash your produce. I use a mild dish soap; however there is a produce wash available that uses natural substances called surfactants. Since many pesticides are made from petrochemicals, the surfactants will attach to the oils so they can be washed away, just be sure to rinse thoroughly.

Refrigerated fruits and vegetables will keep longer than a bowl of fruit sitting on the table. To be fair, here is a list of the produce containing the lowest levels of pesticide residues when tested: Asparagus, avocados, bananas, broccoli, cauliflower, sweet corn, kiwi, mangos, onions, papaya, pineapples, and sweet peas. Even though you have to give extra attention in choosing and preparing your fruits and vegetables, it is absolutely essential that you do so. Raw fruits and vegetables contain vital elements that are not found in any other food.

HEALTHY TASTY SNACKS
