Everyone has their own belief system regarding the meaning of life. For me personally, the meaning of life is happiness. Happiness, after all, is a state of mind and since it is so subjective it has a great and varied meaning to many different people. I think that everyone whether they realize it or not is in the pursuit of happiness.

If the right hand is happiness then the left hand is love. Love is the Great Equalizer. No matter what bad, negative, or nasty thing happens in your life, if you have love you will conquer that unpleasantness as well. I honestly believe that everyone wants to be loved and I also think that everyone needs to be loved. There would be a lot less grief in this world if everyone would just have compassion for their fellow human being.

For some people love and happiness is very elusive and the reason for that is because they don’t have the correct mindset. You must first be able to think and feel love and happiness, love yourself, and when you truly learn to do that you will see more love around you. There are some things you can do to help you achieve that state of mind. It has been my observation that truly happy people seem to have an idea or purpose for their life. It has also been my observation that truly happy people indulge totally in what they are passionate about. Some are professional in their passion and others are hobbyists and enthusiasts.

I’ve also come to realize that most happy people are also giving people, not only of their money, but of their time as well. Now if you think about that for a moment it makes perfect sense. Remember the last time you gave something to someone and you knew it would just blow them away? Or, you gave up some of your time to help someone else, maybe in need? Remember how that made you feel, the excitement and anticipation? Now imagine doing that on a much grander scale. See what I’m talking about now? What a tremendous feeling that is.

Another thing I noticed about happy people is that they are generally optimistic. They are always ready to have a good time, lighten up, and laugh a lot. You know what the old ‘digest’ says about laughter? Well, it’s true, your body and mind will benefit from it in a great way. A good hearty laugh, like exercise, great sex, and excellent food, releases those feel good hormones called endorphins. Endorphins are a production of the pituitary and hypothalamus glands and your brain releases this hormone when you experience happiness. The more you can experience endorphins the happier you will be. Happy people always count their blessings no matter how many they may or may not have. If you are a truly happy person you can look around you at any given moment in time and you will find something to be grateful for and give thanks.

Now I don’t want to make this sound like, “hey man, that’s all I got to do, and I’ll be happy?” No, of course not, and everyday life is not a bowl of cherries. Sure, you know there will be times when things don’t seem to be going right. That’s okay, deal with it, try to keep a positive and optimistic mindset, they’re just bumps in the road, and nothing last forever. The bottom line is you have to have faith. You must have faith in yourself and faith in your higher being.

Please don’t misunderstand me on this I would never try to convince you of something that you don’t feel comfortable with. Because you may or may not have your spiritual philosophy and belief system in place, and whether you do or do not, it is not my design to change that. If you feel you need to change your spiritual and religious views then that is entirely up to you. That’s not what this is about, it has nothing to do with religion, but I have found that happy people are very spiritual.

There is a difference between being religious and being spiritual.

I mentioned earlier that happiness is a state of mind, and while that is true, in order for this state of happiness to be most effective you must include your body and your spirit. Here are some ideas and actions for you to consider in your quest for love and happiness.

Whenever you are confronted with negativity, and it cannot be avoided, try to search for anything positive in the experience, and try to focus on that. I know it’s easier said than done but the more skilled you are at this the easier it will become over time. It is difficult to focus on the positive and optimistic if you are not feeling well. It is absolutely essential that you eat right, exercise regularly, and sleep well if you are to be truly happy. Try not to worry and definitely do not obsess over anything. It only causes stress you don’t need. It does no good to worry about things that you have no control over. There is a great deal of wisdom in the expression, “don’t sweat the small stuff.” Hopefully I don’t have to tell you to be grateful for what you have. Everyone has someone or something in their life to be thankful for and being grateful is absolutely fundamental in achieving love and happiness.

It is really important that you pay attention and be careful with your self talk. For some reason when you are having a negative or bad experience, and especially if you feel you are at fault, you talk down on yourself. The worst part of this is that it seems natural to put yourself down. You say things to yourself like, “I can’t believe you did that, you’re so stupid!” Well, you can knock that off right now, there is absolutely no benefit to you, or anyone else for that matter, and if fact if you keep it up, you will give yourself an inferiority complex. So cut it out and say things to yourself that you like to hear and make you feel good. Pay attention to your thought processes. Sometimes you’ll be having a negative, bad, or evil thought and at first you won’t consciously be aware you are having these types of thoughts and turning positive energy into negative energy. Those types of thought processes will create barriers for you to overcome on your path to seeking love and happiness.

Get physical, yes I mean exercise, but I also mean physical contact with those you love and care about. Hugging, stroking a child’s hair or head, patting your pet on the head are just a few things you can do to put an instant smile of love and happiness on your face.

Give either your time or money or both if you can and help someone out that really needs it. You’re not just giving your time and money you are giving love and maybe some degree of happiness to someone who could really use it. Be forgiving. Do your best to forgive others and yourself because you don’t need the access baggage of guilt and other negative emotions strapped across your back mentally. Learn to let it all go and you will feel free. You will never achieve the true Zen of happiness until you learn to forgive.

You are the sum total of all your life experiences and you didn’t get to where you are or who you are today overnight. It has taken all your experiences and your years for you to arrive at this point in your life. Once you realize this then you know you can change your thought processes leading to a more loving and happier life.

Truly happy people are also spiritual people. To develop your spirituality take a comprehensive and critical look at your belief system, examine your motivations, and understand your feelings. It is also important that you do these things on a regular basis as well as considering the decisions you’ve made and how they have affected your life and those around you. Try to gain a deeper understanding of the relationships you have and the habits you have that give insight regarding the goals you’ve set for yourself. Continue to develop and strengthen your good qualities and work on eliminating those negative traits if you have them.

To deepen your spirituality and help it grow, you should continue to work on and improve your values, morals, beliefs, and positive experiences. Improving these qualities will help you develop meaning in your quest for spirituality and ultimately help you psychologically become a happier person. Often times when your spirituality grows you may very well understand the meaning of your life’s purpose. You will gain wisdom from your connections to those close to you and around you, and you will gain knowledge from your experiences, actions, and how you react to the situations that develop. Recognizing the connections that you have in your environment, the people, nature, plants, and animals and being respectful of all that there is will help you spiritually grow and develop Zen.

Learning to meditate spiritually may help you to look inside yourself seeking the wisdom and calmness that you’ve been looking for in developing balance, awareness, and harmony. There are different styles and ways to meditate. Here are a couple of examples to get you started in reaching a higher awareness, help you clear your mind so that you can reduce distractions, and by focusing on your inner self and reaching a higher state of consciousness.

Transcendental Meditation is a well known technique but what most fail to realize is that you would have to practice it for a considerable amount of time before reaching enlightenment. Of course the more you practice it the more you will benefit. This technique is not difficult to master and you don’t have to concern yourself with special breathing and postures. You only need to sit quietly, relaxed and in a comfortable position, and just focus on your own deep breathing. This type of meditation will help you improve balance, harmony, and creativity. In fact the only challenge to practicing this technique is sticking with it and that’s up to you to decide if it is really a challenge.

Vibrational Meditation is a technique that uses a phrase or mantra that is repeated and focused on throughout the meditation session and all you have to do is concentrate and focus on your selected phrase. Any short positive affirmation type phrase will do as long as it is one that will keep you focused. The phrase I like to use is “Ong Ma Lee Bae Mae Hong.” I learned this from Master Chunyi Lin who is the creator of “Spring Forest Gigong,” (pronounced Chi Gong.) This is a very old six word chant used by Buddhists and Buddhist Monks in Tibet. It is a healing chant and each word has specific properties. “Ong” represents the wisdom of the Universe. “Ma Lee” represents a person’s ever changing heart. “Bae Mae” represents the heart’s purity. “Hong” represents enlightenment and the relationship a person has with the wisdom of God or the Universe. Each word has a specific healing function that is relative to the human body. The sound of “Ong” has healing properties for the eyes, ears, nose, and the head in general. The sound of “Ma Lee” has healing properties for the heart, lungs, throat, and shoulders. The sound of “Bae Mae” has healing properties for the back, spine, stomach, and intestinal tract. The sound of “Hong” has healing properties for the body’s joints and legs. When these six words are used together they bring a powerful balance to the energy of your body and help connect you to the healing energy of the Universe. Master Lin says it is one of his favorite chants and I agree. He also says, “each sound is a healing sound and the meaning is: Open your heart. Go to the Universe. In the oneness you will find the truth of yourself.”

Another excellent meditation technique is the Walking Meditation. This is a great way to exercise and meditate at the same time. When you meditate while walking you will feel a stronger connection to Nature and the world around you. The concept is to focus your mind while walking and there are a couple of ways you could do this. One way is to focus on each step taken to keep your mind clear and free from racing and random thoughts. The way I prefer is to keep my head up and shoulders back while walking and focus on deep breathing. At first you may find this to be somewhat of a challenge because as you are walking, your heart rate is increasing, and your breathing becomes shallow. By focusing on your breathing, taking in long slow deep breathes filling your lungs to full capacity, and exhaling long and slow emptying your lungs as much as possible, you will get the benefit of exercise as well as exchanging the stale air stored in your lungs through normal shallow breathing.

When you breathe normally your breathing is shallow and consequently you are using only the top third of your lungs. The air in the bottom two thirds of your lungs doesn’t get used and becomes stale air. When you practice deep breathing by filling your lungs to capacity and emptying them as much as possible you provide all of your lungs with fresh air. You don’t have to do this for a long period of time, just a few minutes periodically will be fine although you can do it as much as you want, and you should practice deep breathing whether you are walking or not. When I go out for a walk my heart rate is up, I am perspiring, and my breathing becomes shallow, however when I focus on deep breathing I am able to slow my breathing down to seven or eight breathes per minute.

It may be somewhat of a challenge for you, in the beginning, to focus on just one thing, such as a phrase or mantra and deep breathing, due to all the thoughts that race through your mind at any given moment, however those should be all the more reasons you should practice meditation. The great thing about meditation is, even though it may seem difficult at first and it does take some time to master, the more you engage in meditation, the healthier your body, mind, and spirit will be, and your life will become more peaceful and Zen.

Your daily life is most likely complex and very busy and because of this I am sure there are things that will bother you and annoy you from time to time throughout your day. Learning to meditate and becoming more spiritual is a very effective process in managing the stressors in your life. Practicing spirituality and meditation you will become more emotionally balanced creating a feeling of Zen calmness in your life. Soon you will begin to see that the aggravation and those little annoyances of life don’t seem to bother you as much as they use to and quite possibly you’ll feel you have more control over what’s going on in your life.

An excellent side benefit of being spiritually Zen is that it will strengthen your physical body as well. Your emotions will be better balanced, you won’t worry so much about the little things, your immune system will become stronger so you will physically feel better, and your spirituality will become deeper leading to a more calm and peaceful life of Zen.

The mind has incredible powers and combined with a positive mental state and spiritual healing it has even more power to improve your positive outlook. Practicing spiritual meditation and maintaining a healthy positive mental attitude is the key to leading a healthier and happier life. You will have more energy and experience a great sense of balance.
