Here are a few words about heart health. The general consensus in this great country of ours seems to link cholesterol with heart disease. As a result of this some pharmaceuticals have been developed to combat the problem of high cholesterol. The problem is these drugs have dangerous side effects that, in my opinion are far worse than having a high cholesterol count. Yes, I know they may affect only a small percentage, but are you willing to take that risk? I like to gamble, but not with my health.

Really this is an unnecessary risk for most people with high cholesterol as there are far more effective ways to lower your cholesterol naturally without side effects. For example, a diet high in fiber and low in fat, a regular exercise routine that gives you a good cardiovascular workout and reducing sugar consumption are good steps in the right direction.

We have been bombarded by westernized medicine and the main stream media into thinking that we need cholesterol lowering medications to combat this dreaded problem. As I mentioned earlier, the use of statin drugs are dangerous, they can cause liver disease and this makes perfect sense when you consider the fact that everything we eat, drink, or ingest in any way is filtered through the liver. That’s why if you are taking cholesterol lowering medication prescribed by your doctor, you have to have your blood work every six weeks or so, which is required for a liver function test, to make sure your liver enzymes aren’t out of whack.

As you may or may not know, cholesterol lowering medications are fairly expensive. Now that may not be a problem for most as it is usually covered by medical insurance and other prescription plans, but if you have ever had to pay for this yourself you would soon realize how hard this would be on your wallet. When I first learned, through my doctor, that my cholesterol was high, I was self employed. I had to pay for my own doctor visits, dentist visits, and prescription medications. It cost me, at the time, fifty dollars a month. Then after my next visit, the doctor said my numbers weren’t low enough, so he doubled the strength, and guess what that did to the costs, absolutely right, it also doubled. Now, I had a hundred dollar a month drug habit. That was many years ago, I haven’t taken it since, and I don’t plan to.

Cholesterol lowering medications (statins) are big business. Also all the studies about these drugs are funded by the drug manufacturer, which means there is no way these studies are objective and unbiased. They can’t be, or they wouldn’t be as expensive as they are, and the pharmaceutical companies’ profits wouldn’t be in the billions. The problem is the Food and Drug Administration approves drugs based on the studies provided by the pharmaceutical companies. What is needed are independent laboratory studies that has nothing to gain.

Now for the truth. Cholesterol is not as important as everyone would have you believe. The more critical issue is your homocystene levels. You are not likely to hear about that since it isn’t big business. The reason is because homocystene levels can be lowered naturally in several ways. By cutting sugar consumption, high fiber and low fat diet, regular exercise, and consuming certain good quality supplements.

Homocystene is a metabolite of the amino acid, L-methionine, which occurs naturally. L-methionine is used by the body for many functions, including detoxification. The body is designed to keep the levels low which means it generally does not cause a problem. Sometimes homocystene levels become elevated and when this happens it may become toxic and cause arterial inflammation and plaque. It is a well known fact that elevated homocystene levels is a risk factor in vascular disease. 

Here is another thing to consider regarding homocystene levels. It was found that high levels lead to an increase risk of osteoporosis. A study was conducted in the Spring of 2005 in Japan and was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Apparently for some reason that is not clearly known, stroke victims are a much greater risk for hip fractures. So what these Japanese researchers did was divide stroke victims into two groups and followed them for two years. The first group was given a combination of 5 milligrams of folic acid and 1500 micrograms of vitamin B-12 and the second group was given a placebo. Researchers wanted to see if B vitamins would reduce hip fractures in the high risk group. The results they uncovered were very dramatic indeed. They found that in the placebo group, subjects had 43 hip fractures and their homocystene levels increased. In the vitamin group only 10 subjects had hip fractures and their homocystene levels dropped 38 percent.

Two other studies conducted in the Netherlands and Germany concluded similar results. Apparently homocystene levels impacts the bone matrix on which calcium and other minerals are deposited and this matrix becomes calcified during bone formation. High homocystene levels seem to affect the formation of this matrix in a negative way. One other point is that men are not as likely to develop osteoporosis like women do. The theory behind this is that testosterone maintains the bone matrix better. Women also kind of have a double jeopardy because osteoporosis risk rises after menopause, and although it is not completely understood, so do homocystene levels.

However it is not all doom and gloom. It is easier than you think to get your homocystene levels under control. All you need to do is make some dietary improvements and increase your B vitamins. First of all, eliminate processed foods, including sugar and flour, and eat more whole foods, fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as fresh meats. There are three basic vitamins that have been proven to lower homocystene levels and they are B-6, B-12, and folic acid and you will find these together in a good B vitamin complex.

Here’s what I take on a regular basis. A coenzyme B vitamin complex containing B-6, B-12, and folic acid, I also take an Omega 3 supplement for heart health, 1000 to 2000 milligrams of vitamin C, and a good quality multi vitamin formulated for men. You can also get one formulated for women too. None of this has been evaluated by the FDA and now you know why, money.

One last point about vitamin B-12 and people over the age of 65. Apparently older people have a harder time absorbing it and the best way to combat this is to take 1000 micrograms sublingually, meaning under the tongue, since part of it is absorbed through the mucous membranes. You will also have to make sure that it is either hydroxycobalamine or methylcobalamine. The conventional form of cyanocobalamine is not absorbed very well through the mucous membranes.  Read the bottle, it will indicate which type it is.

Get your homocystene levels checked by a blood test and discuss this information with your doctor or trained professional. Changing your diet and taking the recommended supplements is one of the easiest things you can do to reduce your homocystene levels and your risk of heart disease and osteoporosis, and at the same time improving your health. I love a real tasty snack, don’t you?  The problem is most really tasty snacks are not good for you, loaded with calories and sugar, and a bunch of words I can’t even pronounce.
