How Sweet it is, or is it?

Do you know what the number one addiction in the world is? Well, as you could probably tell by the title above, it is sugar. Kind of hard to believe, isn’t it? More than tobacco, alcohol, and a whole host of illegal drugs and not only can you buy by the box or bag right off the grocery store shelf, but it’s in so many packaged and processed foods. The thing is all refined sugars are just empty calories meaning they don’t have any nutritional value. A long time ago pure maple syrup was the sweetener used in kitchens across America but it wasn’t very convenient. It takes about forty gallons of clear sweet sap to make one gallon of pure maple syrup.

You should use pure maple syrup whenever you can instead of refined sugar because the sweet content has balanced sugars plus minerals, amino acids, and vitamins. Most of the minerals in pure maple syrup are potassium, magnesium, calcium, and manganese and the minerals have a specific function in the human body. Potassium has the ability to maintain cell integrity and it is vital in keeping the heart beat steady. Calcium is the most plentiful mineral in the human body and when there is a shortage or deficiency the bones will be the first to be affected. Magnesium regulates the operation of many enzymes numbering in the hundreds and is essential in the release of energy. Magnesium prevents cavities in the teeth by retaining calcium in the tooth enamel. Manganese aids in the functions of many different metabolic processes of the human body.

Pure maple syrup also contains several vitamins that include Niacin, Vitamin B5, Riboflavin, Folic Acid, Vitamin B6, Biotin, and Vitamin A. Niacin helps the energy metabolism of every cell. It is a unique B Vitamin because it makes it from protein. There are two more B Vitamins, Biotin and Vitamin B5 (also known as Pantothenic Acid) are extremely vital in energy metabolism. Riboflavin aids in producing energy in the body. Vitamin B6 plays a key role in protein and amino acid metabolism. Vitamin A has great versatility because it aids in vision, maintaining the linings of the body and the skin, and helps with the defenses of the immune system.

Maple syrup is not without its problems though and it has a lot to do with how the sap is collected. Techniques have been developed that are not beneficial to human consumption. Paraformaldehyde pellets are sometimes inserted into the tap holes and their function is to prevent the sap from clotting and clogging the holes and basically kill germs, which you would think would be a good thing. The problem is it shortens the life span of the tree and these pellets are poisonous and may be present in some syrup products. Another problem is that a vast majority of sap collection utilizes metal buckets or pans that have seams and patches that are soldered with lead. When the metal containers are used for storage the maple syrup can contain trace amounts and lead in any amount is not good. When selecting pure maple syrup for your family pay close attention to the labels and buy only maple syrup sold in glass bottles.

Pure maple syrup is a very versatile sweetener and more than just for use at the breakfast table. In some of your recipes that call for sugar, try using pure maple syrup instead.  Use three quarters of a cup of syrup for each cup of sugar and reduce all liquids that the recipe calls for by three tablespoons. Pure maple syrup is very delicious in coffee, tea, and cereal, especially oatmeal.

There's a war going inside of you this very minute. I call it 'The Fat War' and here is how it works. There is a hormone that actually determines how much fat you have.  In men, it's the accumulation of belly fat, and that 'spare tire' around the middle is quite obvious. Your thyroid hormones are absolutely vital to your metabolism and when they take a nose dive the stress hormone cortisol kicks in and tells your body to start storing more fat, and you know where that fat ends up being stored, right?

Fructose is the enemy, the problem is it seems like it's in everything. There are a lot of ingredients that prevent Leptin from reaching your brain. These ingredients largely come from the creation of processed foods, preservatives, and other additives. However, the one that does more damage than any other food ingredient is fructose. Now don't confuse fructose that comes from raw fruits naturally. That's the good stuff because it is not synthetic and contains the fiber of the actual fruit. This is another classic example of the Yin and Yang theory at work.

If you want to give your leptin levels a boost the best way to do that is by simply eliminating fructose from your diet. Most of the time in reading the label you will see the ingredient high fructose corn syrup. Now, I don't know what 'high fructose' means, but logic would tell me this may have more sugar or concentrated in some way, meaning it might even be worse for you, type of fructose corn syrup. If you would eliminate fructose corn syrup of any type from your diet you may find that you don't have food cravings like you use to and the rate of your metabolism has increased. Not only will you be increasing the leptin levels to your brain but you may also find your losing some unwanted weight as well.

HEALTHY TASTY SNACKS
