Inflammation A Balancing Act

Did you know that inflammation is what your body does to protect and repair itself against illness and injury? It also protects itself from pollution, toxins, and germs. Now, you're probably thinking, "wait a minute!  Most everything I hear about inflammation is that it's bad for me in a number of ways." And you know what? You would also be right. So now you're probably trying to come to a logical conclusion about inflammation, how can something like inflammation be both good and bad. To me, this example is a classic representation of Yin and Yang, it's all about balance. Keeping inflammation in balance is the key to protecting your body's vascular, immune, and hormonal system, among others, operating at peak efficiency.

If your body's repair system (inflammation) is overworked due to over taxation of your body's other systems (vascular, immune, etc.) then inflammation starts working against you causing more damage than it is trying to repair. So a certain amount of inflammation is good, kind of like a certain amount of stress is good, because both will notify your repair system allowing it to respond to specific needs. If inflammation, like stress, is not managed properly and kept in balance, it can damage healthy tissue at the cellular level creating fibrosis, scar tissue build up, causing heart disease, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, and Alzheimer’s.

The really good news about all this inflammation business is that you have the power to completely control it. It's all about life style choices. If you are consuming mostly processed foods, fried foods, fast foods, foods loaded with sugar, processed snack foods, and baked goods then you are high balling down the inflammation highway and a crash is eminent. I can also guarantee that you are consuming way more trans fat than you should, because actually you shouldn't be consuming any trans fat. If this is you then you need to make a serious dietary change and now. There are foods you can switch to that actually promote a healthy inflammation balance. Get rid of all that junk I just mentioned and eat more citrus fruits, leafy greens, wild caught Alaskan salmon, apples, all berries, carrots, nuts, beans, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, broccoli, and well, you get the idea.

The next thing you need to do is eliminate the stresses in your life and if you can't eliminate them, at least try to reduce them as much as possible. The negative stresses release hormones like cortisol and cortisol will allow the release, or in this case over release, of the body's defense and repair system. So it becomes vitally important to reduce all the stresses in your life as much as you can and properly manage those stresses by engaging regularly in meditation, yoga, deep breathing, martial arts, Tai Chi, or Qi Gong as well as any other relaxation techniques that work well for you.

There are supplements that you could add to your diet that are beneficial to reducing inflammation like turmeric, Omega 3 oil, Vitamins C, E, D, and selenium can help reduce inflammation and protect cells. I don't have to tell you to exercise do I? Well, like I said, it's all about life style choices. So in addition to dietary changes and managing stress be sure to get plenty of sleep. Sleep deprivation can also promote inflammation. If you need to lose weight, then get busy and change your diet and exercise, because if you are overweight or obese you are at a greater risk than most. Listen to your doctor and other health care providers when it comes to managing your diabetes or heart condition. Be Zen about this and discuss all these things with your health care provider as well.
