Martial Arts and Self Defense

Martial arts are for everyone. This is so true, regardless of your health conditions, or what physical shape you are in, martial arts can provide you with tremendous benefits. It most certainly can help you become stronger and increase your range of motion and flexibility. It does not matter how old you are; it is excellent for children as well as for seniors and for everyone in between.

There are many different styles of martial arts from around the world. With the use of the internet you could gather enough information that will help you decide the style that you would like to learn. Some styles are composed of kicks and punches, some styles are composed of grappling and falling techniques, and some are composed of joint locking and pressure point techniques.

Once you narrow down a few styles that interest you, the next thing would be to search for a school that teaches the style you want. Depending on how popular the style is, you may be able to find more than one school, and of course you should definitely visit each school you are interested in. Observe the structure of the school and the classes, watch how the instructors are teaching, and determine if their methodology matches your philosophy. Ask questions if you have them, and talk to some of the students and get their spin on what they are learning. Schools that offer a couple of free classes are usually very good and getting your feet wet, so to speak, and it is a great way to determine if it’s the right style, school, and instructor for you.

I have studied for more than two years in Japan. My Sensei is an tenth degree black belt and Grandmaster in Shotokan Karate. I earned a brown belt. I have also studied for more than three years in the United States. My grand master is a Korean with an eighth degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and Hap Ki Do, and a fifth degree black belt in Kum Do. I earned a first degree black belt in Hap Ki Do. In Japan karate schools are called dojos and in Korea they are called dojangs.

I believe that the origin of the martial arts may have had its beginnings in the Far East, but I don’t think anyone can say for sure. After all, some styles were developed in other parts of the world. For example, a style called Savate’ is from France. There are so many styles and schools of martial arts that it would be close to impossible to outline and discuss each one. However I would like to point out a few of the more popular styles and give you a little information on those to help you get started.

Do not spend a lot of time deciding on which style is right for you, because it is all good and you will become a dedicated student to whatever style you choose. Once you begin to learn and practice any style of martial art, you will be begin to develop an excellent sense of self and a most positive attitude, one that will instill in you the ‘yes I can do it’ approach to everything that makes up your everyday life.

If you want to increase your strength and energy, lose weight, improve your flexibility, relieve stress and tension, and learn self defense, then I know of nothing else that will better enable you to accomplish that than martial arts. Through participation and practice, every type or style of martial art will give you confidence, control, speed, power, balance, focus, and respect. Respect for the art, respect for the master, and respect for yourself.

I think it’s important to make a distinction between martial arts and self defense.  The martial arts are just that, arts with very specifically designed rules.  In self defense there are no rules. A lot of people learn the martial arts for self defense, but I have to admit, I’m not one hundred percent on board with this being the main reason. While it is true that the techniques of martial arts are very well adapted for self defense, I would hope most would study and practice it for the love of the art, physical fitness, and self improvement. However, I suppose that if you choose to study and practice a martial art, and your reason for doing so is self defense, then I guess that’s okay, at least you are learning.

Self defense is so much more than learning a martial art, or handling a taser, or shooting a gun. It requires you to sharpen your intuitive skills and learn to assess your situation every time you step away from your front door. You must learn to avoid any situation that is a potential threat. The first requirement of a good self defense program is to go on the offense and be proactive. The first stage of an effective self defense program is awareness.

Awareness means being aware of your surroundings, being able to recognize potential threats, and potentially dangerous situations. I observe people all the time, especially if they are in close proximity, watching for abnormal behavior. I am not saying you have to act paranoid every time you leave your home, but you do need to pay close attention to your surroundings. One thing I have noticed in my observations of people is that most are preoccupied in some way. They seem to be walking around oblivious to what is going on around them. Some will be totally absorbed walking around with their headphones on listening to whatever and just about everyone these days it seems has a smart phone and this makes preoccupation and unawareness worse.

Learning a martial art is a good place to start when it comes to personal self defense because it will help with your self confidence and make you more self assured. However, awareness of your surroundings will hopefully keep you from getting into an unsafe situation in the first place. It is important for you to know what your limitations are. I don’t care how much martial arts training you have or how many different styles and techniques you know, the most difficult thing you will ever encounter is how to remain calm in the face of fear.

When you are faced with fear your mind and body generally work together for self preservation. The two options that become available to you are to either stand your ground and defend yourself or run to a safe place, which in essence is also defending yourself. This is called the ‘flight or fight response’ and either one is acceptable.

I created a self defense program of my own based on my five years of formal martial arts training. I borrowed techniques from my Shotokan Karate training and my Hap Ki Do training, incorporated it into a self defense program, and called it Street Smart Self Defense. I taught this program to a number of students in an adult education program at the local community college, and the very first two things I educate students on is awareness of your surroundings and to remain calm in the face of fear.

Don’t confuse running for safety as being a chaotic response when faced with fear. It takes a calm and rational mind to make that decision when bodily harm is close at hand. A chaotic response in a potentially dangerous situation would be to freeze and not be able to protect yourself, and this happens to some people because they don’t know what to do, and they can’t seem to help it.

Living cost a lot more these days and to be truthful, cost of living has been steadily going up from year to year, and yet somehow, making more money to keep up has always been a problem. I can’t believe what I have to pay for a car and gasoline, not to mention food. The world population is getting crazier day by day, with the war on terrorism, and other geographical conflicts. Apparently, politics are up for grabs by anyone who has enough money to pursue such an endeavor, qualified or not, and we seemed to be having another civil war. I don’t mean like the North and the South, I mean between the Democrats and the Republicans, or the left and the right. We are all Americans, well most of us, and we should be working together.
