Meat for a Healthy Diet

When it comes to selecting meats from my local grocery store, sometimes I have a difficult time in choosing what I think I should eat, I mean it all looks so good, but then again looks can be deceiving. If you are not a vegetarian, beef, poultry, pork, and fish or seafood is an excellent source of iron, protein, vitamins, and minerals. Of course you should always try to buy organically raised meats if you can, I know, it cost a little more, but the quality is so much better. Seriously, you want to buy the best and leanest cuts available, the lower cuts and some commercially grown will have more saturated fat, and that’s one thing among others in your cuts that you don’t need.

One thing to keep in mind when you are shopping for all varieties of meats is that often times less is more, in other words, the least amount of  preservatives, sodium, and other additives in a cut of meat the better. This goes for any processed meats too. I know they are pre-packaged and super convenient, and really it doesn’t hurt to eat it once in a while when you want to have a quick sandwich, but you shouldn’t really eat it all the time, and purchase those that have the least amount of preservatives. When you are considering your next purchase, look at the ingredients, if there are a bunch of words you cannot pronounce, then you probably should pass on it.

Earlier I talked about buying organic fruits and vegetables if you can and the same thing goes for meats and seafood also. It’s always best to buy as fresh as you can and preparing it yourself, that way you will always know how it’s prepared, and what seasonings are used. Just as important as buying fresh organic meat and seafood it is also important that you handle them in the safest manner possible.

Most illnesses that come from something you have eaten are a result of improper handling. By careless handling of meat, seafood, and poultry, especially poultry you risk contaminating other foods, for example your salad or other raw veggies that you may be preparing at the same time. Cooking meat, seafood, and poultry to the proper temperature will kill bacteria and other pathogens however your salad and other raw foods are still contaminated.

Here’s what I do to insure safe handling of all foods. First I prepare one and then the other. For example, I will prepare and start cooking meat, seafood, or poultry before I start preparing a salad, or I will prepare the salad and keep it in the refrigerator while I prepare other dishes. Another good way to cut down on cross contamination, especially for seafood and poultry is not washing or rinsing the food before you cook it. Sometimes washing and rinsing will splash on other foods nearby and you may not realize it. Also wash your knives and other utensils thoroughly in hot soapy water and don’t forget your cutting board. Speaking of cutting boards, this is especially important if you use a cutting board made of wood. I would recommend that you do as I do and use a glass or ceramic cutting board. After using a wooden cutting board over a period of time, you still may not be able to get it clean enough, and using it for other foods causes cross contamination.

If you are planning on eating healthy you need to cut the fat, not only the fat content in some foods and some processed foods, but also cutting the fat in the meat, seafood, and poultry as well. That means trimming any excess fat and buying the leanest cuts possible. Fish, especially salmon, is an excellent choice in reducing the fat content in some of your meals. Chicken is another good alternative to beef and pork, and of course when it comes to chicken, skinless and boneless is the way to go.

An excellent alternative to ground beef for dishes like spaghetti, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, tacos, and chili is ground turkey. It’s lower in fat content, however, buy and use a good quality brand, and pay close attention to the nutritional labels to make sure you are getting the quality you want. You don’t have to give up beef completely, unless of course you want to; just consider having an alternative more often and having healthier meals. Beef and pork are an excellent source of B vitamins, iron, and zinc and of course if you are like me, I do enjoy having a nice porterhouse steak once in a while. There are some other good alternatives to the meats you buy in your local grocery store. Organic grass fed beef is an excellent alternative and even though it can be a little more expensive, it is very much worth it, because it will be leaner, healthier, and have a higher nutritional content. You may also consider eating buffalo or bison and venison as they will also have a lower fat and higher protein content than beef.
