RBGH, What the Heck is That?

A lot of people have health concerns about dairy products and a vast majority of the population in the United States, and I’m sure other countries as well, are intolerant about most dairy products. Some folks are concerned about the negative side effects of a genetically engineered hormone that is injected into dairy cows called recombinant bovine growth hormone designed to increased milk production. To be fair, my research has uncovered information that this hormone has little or no effect on human beings, while at the same time other research indicates that it does. This conflicting information presents a gray area what is true and what isn’t. Studies have concluded that the injection of this hormone does cause health issues in cows, and I mean some real nasty health problems like cysts, digestion problems, and lesions to name a few. It seems logical to me that if a cow has significant health problems that it would be passed through and into whatever products we would consume whether it be milk or meat.

You might be interested to know that the use of RBGH is prohibited in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Israel, and all 27 European Union countries. I find that highly significant, and just because it is not banned in the United States, and there doesn’t appear to create health problems in humans, doesn’t mean Americans should ignore it and assume that it is safe for consumption.

The trade name for this hormone that no human or animal needs is Posilac and in Autumn 2008 Monsanto sold their RBGH business to Eli Lilly for three hundred million dollars. Hmm, I guess dairy production is profitable after all. Of course just like anything else in life, you are going to have to make your own decision about this, but it should be a well informed and educated decision. There is a wealth of information in support of and against dairy products, so I would suggest that if this topic concerns you, do a little research for yourself so you can make a decision that is in your best interest.

Now, you are probably asking yourself, why in the heck does a large part of the world population consume so much milk? The milk producers of the world would have you believe that milk helps build strong bones and that it is the best source of calcium.  I think I can go you one better. HEALTHY TASTY SNACKS
