Self Defense Tips for You

Here are some tips to help you become more aware and provide you with a well rounded self defense program.

1. First of all pay attention. Look at other people and see who is watching you or following you, not only on foot, but when you are driving in traffic as well. In all the classes and sessions where I have taught Street Smart Self Defense, the question I always ask is, why are you taking this course? On more than one occasion I have had women tell me because they were raped, and in those situations the victims were totally unaware of what was about to happen to them, and when it did happen they didn’t know what to do to protect themselves.

2. f you stand and fight you need to remain calm and know your self defense techniques well. If you run, again you need to remain calm and run towards a crowd of people or into a business if possible.

3. When you are approaching a parking lot headed towards your car at any time of the day or night, observe who is around you and the location of your parked car. If you see a car parked next to yours with someone sitting inside, especially if it’s a man, go back where you came from, like the mall for example, and wait for them to leave.

4. Don’t look or act like you are an easy target and this is mostly for women. Act and walk with confidence. When strangers approach you, look them in the eye, and if they seem suspicious to you maintain eye contact until you feel there is no longer a threat.

5. If you are confronted by surprise with a dangerous situation don’t let anyone take you anywhere. Generally most of the time that will only take a dangerous situation and make it worse, so don’t let anyone force you into a car and stay away from questionable areas where there is no one else around.

6. Remember this, the last thing any attacker wants is to get caught. If you think someone is trying to abduct you, lay on the ground making it extremely difficult if not impossible to get you into a car. Create chaos and confusion by creating a disturbance so that others will notice what’s going on and hopefully help you.

7. At any point in time when confronted with an attacker, if you have learned self defense techniques through your martial arts training, now would be a good time to react.

8. If someone tries to abduct you with a knife or a gun and he tells you not to scream or he’ll kill you, basically he has just told you what will ruin his plan for you, so go ahead and scream, kick, bite, punch, and throw things. Your objective at this point is to create fear for him by increasing his chances of getting caught.

9. Take whatever you have on your person and turn it into a weapon. A good example of this would be your keys. If you are walking towards your car you probably already have them in your hands anyway. Place a key between each finger and if you are attacked target the most vulnerable areas that would include the eyes, groin, and throat. If you are using self defense techniques that you learned from your martial arts training, then a couple of well placed kicks can be very effective. A kick straight down on top of the attacker’s foot close to the ankle is very painful as well as a sharp kick to the knee cap.

Living cost a lot more these days and to be truthful, cost of living has been steadily going up from year to year, and yet somehow, making more money to keep up has always been a problem. I can’t believe what I have to pay for a car and gasoline, not to mention food. The world population is getting crazier day by day, with the war on terrorism, and other geographical conflicts.
