Many things in your life can cause great stress, some is good stress and some is bad stress. If you put pressure on yourself to accomplish goals or complete a project before a deadline, and of course accomplishment of that goal or project brings you a benefit or reward, then you may consider that to be good stress. It is also called good stress because you initiated it and after you’ve accomplished the goal the stress no longer exist leaving you with a feeling of satisfaction.

Troublesome problems that create fear, anxiety, depression, anger, and loss of sleep is considered to be bad stress. Good and bad stress is basically determined by your own interpretation, and how it affects your life on a daily basis. Your awareness and how you handle the different stresses in your life is really the key to successful stress management.

One technique you can use to manage good and bad stress is to keep everything in proper perspective by minimizing problems and maximizing accomplishments. When you do this you will free yourself of any unconscious thought of the problem being bigger than it really is, and if the goals, challenges, problems, and setbacks seem to be smaller to begin with, it is easier to keep them small and in perspective. Actually, keeping everything in perspective is really not that difficult all you really need to do is give yourself a series of statements that apply directly to you. For example, I’m still alive, I feel good, tomorrow will give me another opportunity, it is not over until it’s over, I can still win, and I learned a lesson today that will help me in the future.

It is very difficult to live a stress free life. It requires tremendous resources that very few of us are capable of having. To live a stress free life, the first thing you will need is perfect health. Now if you have this, great, after all if you don’t have your health, then those other areas won’t mean as much. Those other areas that are essential to living a stress free life are spirituality, relationships, and money. So if you have all these, congratulations, you are a member of a very elite group. Cherish it and enjoy it, because it is difficult to determine how long it will last.

There are many stress factors, and there are other ways to reduce or relieve stress in your life. There have been numerous studies in recent years regarding meditation and the effects it has on stress reduction. The American Heart Association published a report finding that meditation can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease. The most recent study conducted by the American Heart Association showed that consistently practicing meditation improved heart and artery health by 69 percent. Regular meditation reduces pain, high blood pressure, and anxiety. Another study conducted by the University of Wisconsin discovered that meditation boosts the immune system and brain function. There are numerous studies and more being conducted all the time that support the outstanding health benefits of meditation. Harvard University conducted a study concluding that regular meditation can reduce pain, lower blood pressure, and lower production of cortisol.

There is a variety of stress management techniques available as well as making lifestyle adjustments to help your body from reacting to stress in the first place. Here are some things you can do that has helped a lot of people to relax the body and mind and help maintain healthy cortisol levels.

No matter how hard you try, you can’t feel good all the time. So you might as well accept the fact that pain is a part of life. I’ll be the first one to stand up and admit that I have a very low tolerance to pain. Everyone knows that pain does not have to be life threatening to cause great discomfort. The mind is incredibly powerful and I believe the more you focus on aches and pains, the more stress it will cause you and guess what? The more aches and pains you will have. So the best way to reduce stress in this area is consciously try and not focus on it. It often isn’t easy to do and it does take concerted effort. You have to get rid of the habit of worrying about problems that don’t exist. Try not to live in a ‘what if’ world. If you find yourself wondering about the results of your physical exam, or your car is in the shop and you don’t know if you will have to buy a new one, or if you are involve in a legal matter that may not go well for you, try not to think negatively as this may cause you undue stress, just try not to think about it at all. So many people get caught up in thinking something bad is going to happen, myself included, although I am getting better at it, and then when the outcome is good we realize that stress and worry was unnecessary.

You can reduce your stress dramatically by accepting the fact that there is no such thing as the perfect child, parent, spouse, job, or home just to name a few. Try to think in terms of balance, it is a law of nature, and if you do, you will find yourself feeling tranquil, happier, and it will bring more peace into your life. Don’t make yourself crazy by trying to get everyone to do things your way because I will tell you right now it ain’t gonna happen. The best you can hope for is to tell people precisely what you want them to do and then let them do it their way.

It is very important that you control your fear and anger. Both of these cause a tremendous amount of stress and they also have the ability to extend pain. Fear and anger also lead to the dark side, sorry, I couldn’t resist. Although it is true, you must learn to let go, and act just the opposite. Being able to forgive is a very powerful weapon to have in your arsenal. The most difficult thing to do in the face of fear and anger is to smile and act as if nothing is wrong. Think clearly and calmly about any situation that causes fear and anger, and once you start thinking in that way you will begin to realize that the stress of the situation no longer bothers you and you will feel better about yourself. Being forgiving is not easy to do, but with time, patience, and practice it is very much worth it. Everything I have just talked about is basically to provide you with a pathway to gain a better understanding of stress and anxiety and how it affects your life.
