Super Foods

The term ‘super foods’ is given to a group of foods that are the richest in natural minerals and trace minerals, however, don’t look for these in your local supermarket because you probably won’t find them there. You’ll have to get them from a whole food or health food store.

Ocean or sea algae is loaded with minerals and trace minerals. It’s very easily assimilated in the body making it easy to digest. It contains protein, carbohydrates, Beta Carotene, Chlorophyll, Omega 3, and fifty different minerals.

Spirulina is a blue green alga that is usually sold as a supplement. It has a tremendous amount of phytochemicals which are compounds that fight disease. Researchers at the National Institute of Health are currently studying phytochemicals in an effort to learn how they prevent diseases.

Phytochemicals are compounds found in fruits and vegetables, it gives them their color, and protects their cells from free radicals. Spirulina has extensive cancer fighting abilities. A scientist, Dr. Nair, with the United States Department of Agriculture demonstrated that Spirulina inhibits mouth cancer. It is loaded with Beta Carotene and this may explain how it slowed or even stopped the growth of cancer cells. Dr. Nair says cervix cancer, like mouth cancer, is on the rise around the world, and they both have the same kind of mucous membrane. Spirulina may be able to help a lot of people. It has other benefits that your body could use, do a little research, and learn more on this dynamic super food.

Before I move on to the next super food, I found something that was very interesting to me regarding Spirulina supplements. I know this information may be a little dated but I still feel that it is just as applicable today as it was when first published. According to the Nutrition Report International, volume 37, 1988, a study was conducted with 30 men who had mild hypertension and high cholesterol. These men took Spirulina supplements and at the end of four weeks they showed a significant reduction in their LDL (that’s the bad stuff) numbers.

Chlorella was discovered by a Dutch scientist in 1890 but it wasn’t until the 1950s in Japan that scientists discovered its tremendous potential and the excellent effect it has on health due to its high concentration of Beta Carotene and chlorophyll. Chlorella has more than twenty vitamins, a vitamin B complex, Beta carotene, vitamins C and E, iron, calcium, and 19 amino acids. It contains the highest source of chlorophyll and that’s great because chlorophyll is a liver detoxifier, a bowel cleanser, and has the ability to stimulate tissue re growth. This algae has something special that no other algae has and that’s the ability to bind itself with heavy metals (cadmium, lead, mercury,) pesticides, and other toxins and safely removes them from your body.

Although more research is needed, it appears the pomegranates have more antioxidants than other foods that are known to have high antioxidant power like blueberries, green tea, red wine, and cranberry juice. The problem with most cranberry juices on the market is they are loaded with sugar and added juices from other fruits and if you have ever tried organic pure cranberry juice you will know that it is extremely tart making it difficult to drink. Pomegranate juice is quite tasty, a little tangy, and the sugar content comes directly from the pomegranate itself.

The pomegranate is loaded with nutrients, phytochemical compounds, and contains high levels of polyphenols and flavonoids. Studies are beginning to show that these potent properties may offer protection from heart disease and cancer. They may also improve blood flow to the heart, prevent plaque from building up in your blood vessels, and reduce the plaque buildup that may already exist. Drinking pomegranate juice daily may very well lower your cholesterol and blood pressure. The high antioxidant levels in pomegranate juice have also been shown to reduce the aggregation of blood platelets. In some tests pomegranates have been shown to prevent the growth of breast, prostate, and colon cancer, and leukemia. The vitamin content in pomegranates is loaded with C, E, and K, and it also contains potassium, niacin, and fiber.

Although it is a bit pricey, I prefer to drink pomegranate juice every morning, but actually when I consider the health properties of this amazing juice I am considering drinking it periodically throughout my day. You can also add pomegranate seeds to your salads and other dishes. I will warn you though that the rind of a pomegranate is kind of tough and you may find it a challenge cutting it away and getting to the fruit. Check your local grocery store, you may be able to buy just the seeds, and not have to deal with cutting one open. There are no negative side effects to drinking pomegranate juice and it won't affect your blood sugar levels or your body weight. HEALTHY TASTY SNACKS

I love a real tasty snack, don’t you?  The problem is most really tasty snacks are not good for you, loaded with calories and sugar, and a bunch of words I can’t even pronounce.
