Muay Thai is a martial art originating from Thailand and is a style closely associated with kickboxing. It is an ancient style created by the warriors of Thailand long ago. A majority of this martial art’s techniques make effective use of the knees and elbows for striking. Muay Thai is very popular, studied, and practiced in many countries around the world. Additionally, the Thai military and the United States Navy Seals are well trained in this deadly martial art.

Muay Thai is often called Thai boxing and an experienced skilled fighter can defeat an opponent with just one blow. This martial art does use swords, sticks, and spears but the use of weapons requires a great deal of practice and precision. Weapon movements and executions need to be fast and hard. One of the major differences that set Muay Thai apart from other styles of martial arts is that the opponent must be in close quarters with the Muay Thai fighter to be effective since most of the striking techniques use elbows and knees. Muay Thai’s philosophy of striking hard using the elbows and knees is that it does the most damage and brings a quick end to the fight.

Two of the most popular and most common kicks in Muay Thai are the roundhouse kick and the low kick. The roundhouse kick is executed using the straight leg and then rotating the entire body from the hip. The low kick is executed by moving the body in a circular motion and landing a low kick to the opponent’s shin. Muay Thai kicks are slower but more powerful than other styles of martial arts and three reasons for this are, snapping kicks are executed in the other styles and Muay Thai will teach you to follow through, and each time a kick is executed the movement requires the whole body to rotate from the hip, and instead of the foot striking the target of the opponent the shin is used in Muay Thai.

If you decide to learn Muay Thai you will need to dedicate several years to master it and the training and conditioning are very tough and demanding. Once you have become proficient in this martial art you will become physical strong with the ability to take down your opponent in most cases with just one well placed kick.
