The Benefits of Zen

Here is a basic list of benefits in a Zen program however you will need to do your own research to find the program that’s right for you.

1. Gain control over your emotions and manage them better.

2. Help you if you’re feeling sad or depressed.

3. Give you the ability to change something about yourself that you don’t like.

4. Help you face your fears and conquer them.

5. Give you encouragement to be strong and happy.

6. Help you feel content with your current situation.

7. Help you learn who you are by identifying your strengths and weaknesses.

8. Help you improve your weaknesses and becoming stronger.

9. Give you personal strength so you can define who you are and what you are looking for.

Meditation is a part of living a life of Zen. Once you start a regular routine of meditation you’ll realize how important it is to you. It doesn’t have to be anything complicated, involving difficult positions, unless of course you want to. You can meditate any time of the day or night and for as long as you want to from five to ten minutes to hours if you desire. I don’t think there is a wrong way to meditate and to me meditation is the art of relaxation. Basically you can do anything you want, from sitting quietly or listening to relaxing music, and practicing focused deep breathing. You can meditate while lying down, sitting, standing, and even walking.

Improving yourself is how you grow and evolve. Practicing meditation and deep breathing will keep you centered in your thought and decision making processes. You will also find the more you meditate the more benefit you will receive. You will be able to meditate on any problem that overwhelms you and make a better decision on what to do about it. The basic principle of living a life of Zen and meditation is to become free. Meditation can help you let go of negative energy that arises from emotions such as fear, hatred, anger, bigotry, rage, and prejudice. These negative emotions can take an otherwise healthy mind, and if not properly addressed, lead it down the path to the dark side. Meditation and adopting a life of Zen can free your mind and spirit and if you allow it into all areas of your life, I think you will find the calmness, awareness, and peace of mind you’ve been looking for.

If you wish to live your life by a Zen philosophy then you must keep your ego in check. It is very difficult to achieve true happiness, and for some it is impossible, when the ego gets in the way. This is especially true at those times when you are feeling self important. At that moment you need to pay close attention to your thoughts and ask yourself questions like what are you trying to hide? Are you afraid of something? Try to define what it is and I think once you come up with an answer, you’ll find that whatever it is that you’re facing will begin to fade away, and you will feel free. If you practice living in the moment and spend less time on the past and future, then your ego will become less important, and you will be and feel happier.

I think it’s okay to reflect on your wonderful experiences from the past while at the same time not focusing on negative past experiences. I also think it’s okay to think about what you want to accomplish in your future. However to live a life of Zen and being truly happy, you must be centered in the here and now, and not allow your ego to be in control of your thought processes.

I’m sure you would agree that even though we spend a fair amount of time reflecting on our past experiences, it seems to be the future that we are most concerned about. In many ways it’s logically understandable and in most cases it’s emotionally and psychologically healthy to reminisce about the good times while trying to let go of the bad or negative experiences. However the future with all the uncertainties and wondering what tomorrow will bring seems to occupy a great deal of time because you have a schedule to keep and plans to make in an effort to try and stay one step ahead of ourselves. It’s no secret that a majority of our concern, tension, and stress comes from worrying about tomorrow.

I’m not saying you shouldn’t plan for the future, but consider this, when you spend most of your time living in the present, the here and now, you’ll begin to have more freedom in your life. Freedom from anxiety, stress, and other negative emotions that come from worrying about the unknown and in most cases probably has very little justification for doing so. You should be able to plan for the future but only in the context of those events that you actually do have control over. Considering the fact that on average you have approximately twelve thousand to fifty thousand random thoughts on a daily basis and the worse part of that is a large percentage of those thoughts are experienced day after day, they don’t change. That is a significant amount of thinking that causes undue stress and worry on your mind and body. It’s really no wonder why people around the world from many cultures have been meditating for the last three thousand years and why it’s so beneficial to do so.

Your thought processes have a significant influence on your environment, in fact, your thoughts literally create your environment. Your thoughts influence your personality, health, how your body functions, and how it influences your future. That’s why it is very critical that you take great care in what you think about by focusing on positive feel good thoughts through meditation, Yoga, martial arts, and visualization all in effort to bring you more peace, harmony, balance, and happiness.

The past is just that, the past, you cannot change it, and the future is unknown. You can plan for the future, and that’s fine, but you can’t really predict what will happen. To reach a true state of happiness and freedom, try to base your decisions without the need to be approved, without the need to control, and without the need to judge. If you think about it, this is what your ego does every moment you are awake. If you center your life on the here and now, and live in the moment, you will probably find that most of your concerns, stress, anxiety, and tension will fade away allowing you to become a happier and more fulfilled person.

Whenever someone greets me and asks, “how are you?” I always say I’m doing fine or I’m doing well, regardless of how I truly feel. I thank them for asking and I always ask the same question in return. Part of the reason I do this is to keep my response positive and the other part is because no one wants to know how I really feel.  Have you ever experienced someone and asked them how they are doing only to receive a long dissertation about their particular ailments and how they really feel? What happens is this type of person keeps those ill feelings alive and well because they tell everyone about them and you end up with regret in asking them in the first place.

In order for your life to be Zen and experience happiness as much as possible it is essential for you to focus on good feelings that are both physical and mental in nature. When you feel good you will experience heightened sensations around you and your emotions will be more positive leading to a healthier state of mind. Through meditation and regular physical workouts you will be able to release bad or negative feelings which will absolutely do you no good to keep them hidden within yourself. Negative emotional feelings can create physical ailments in your body. Remember this, it is difficult to feel bad when you are feeling good, and feeling good is essential to your physical and mental well being.

What I am about to tell you may seem a little odd but it has wisdom nonetheless. Try not to think about feeling because thinking is not feeling. Let that sink in for a moment and realize that your feelings are physical and tangible while your thinking is a mental process. So if you really want to feel, don’t think, just be aware by allowing your body and your emotions to tell you how you are feeling.

Meditation can help you tune into to your feelings and emotions without thinking about them. Just be aware of them without the need to label them or judge them. If you meditate on this and learn to let them go your body and your mind will be free to enjoy those experiences around you with heightened aestheticism.

It’s important that you eliminate from your mind and body all the negative and ill feelings as much as possible they are toxic not only to your mind but your body as well. Some of your negative feelings that arise from anger, fear, depression, and anxiety are toxic habits that you may have developed over time, and you may not even be aware of it. These toxic habits influence those negative feelings and they can have an adverse affect on you physically. The good news is that you can change those habits and negative feelings by learning to let go and paying close attention to your self talk. We all have self talk, some of us talk quietly in our own minds, and some of us are more vocal, but we all do it.

When you engage in negative self talk you need to make yourself aware that you are doing so and learn to stop it in its tracks. At first it may not be easy to do but the key is to not let it frustrate you. When you start to have a negative conversation with yourself try to develop a trigger word or phrase to stop it. I actually have a trigger word and a trigger phrase that is very effective for me and you can do the same. When I experience a negative thought or negative self talk, I say “stop!” or “okay, that’s enough,” and then move on to something more pleasant to think about. If you practice doing this or something similar you will experience more positive thoughts, be more content and happier with yourself, have more peace in your life, and become Zen.
