The objectives of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy are the identification of irrational thoughts, identifying those assumptions and beliefs, and how they relate to negative emotions. These objectives also help to identify how and why they are dysfunctional, illogical, and are just not helpful in any way. The effort of this therapy is to reject these illusions and distortions and replace them with alternative beliefs that are more realistic and helps the patient.

Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy focuses on resolving certain issues that affect the emotional health and behavioral patterns that cause problems and disturbances. This type of therapy can be helpful to those who do not necessarily get upset because of an unfortunate situation. It is more how they view this situation in terms of their own reality and how it affects their belief or attitude towards this particular problem. This type of therapy can be helpful to those who, to a large extent, build or create their own emotional problems and they may indulge in self pity, anger, guilt, self blame, hurt feelings, shame, and depression. Further this type of person may indulge in avoidance, withdrawal, compulsive behavior, addiction, and procrastination. The goal of the therapist is to direct in a very active way that teaches the patient how to recognize the self defeating beliefs and irrational fears and how to actively dispute and replace them with thoughts that are more helpful and rational.

Interpersonal Therapy has been studied in great detail for more than twenty years and it has been very successfully in treating those with depression. Under modification, Interpersonal Therapy has been successful in treating other psychiatric problems like bulimia and substance abuse. It has also been helpful with transitions in age groups from adolescents to adult hood, middle age, and late life. Interpersonal Therapy has been used as a short term therapy of usually sixteen weeks and modified to be used as maintenance therapy for those who have recurring depression.
